Old Country Town Setting

Granville Veterans Park

The History of Granville

The village of Granville was settled in 1799 near the Cumberland River on the banks of Martin's Creek. It is located in southwestern Jackson County near the Smith and Putnam County lines.

From the early 1800's Granville was a riverboat town with a major agricultural focus.  It was incorporated in 1837 and became a booming town with stores, banks, hotels, doctor's office, pharmacy, blacksmith, funeral home, churches, and private and public schools.

In 1972 Granville became a lakeside community where Cordell Hull lake was developed on the Cumberland River.  Since that time it has become a recreational area for fishing, boating, swimming, camping and picnicking.

Today Granville is a still country setting with historical buildings telling the story of its rich southern heritage. Come visit and relax as you become part of yesteryear.

Granville Museum

A community with a rich heritage has preserved its history with the establishment of the Granville Museum.  The museum opened in May 1999, in the old Granville Church of Christ building with an addition of a farm implement museum in 2000.  The museum features a 15 minute video on the history of Granville, historical items such as old store counters, cases and bank teller window.  The history is also told with over 1500 pictures displayed. The museum is open June through October on Saturdays from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m.  The museum sponsors Heritage Day in May, Granville Quilt Festival in October, Veterans Appreciation Day in November, and Granville Country Christmas in December.  The museum is open by request and it continues to look for additional items.  For more information please call 931-268-4411 or 931-653-4511.

Benn Sutton's General Merchandise

Just a stones throw from the banks of the Cumberland River stands the Ben Sutton General Merchandise Store and Grocery.

Built in the 1850 (circa) it continued to serve the families of the Granville area until the 1960's.  The two story building is very unique, with a balcony which features some of the special products the store offered. The original building has much of the same interior fixtures it had at the turn of the 20th century.  Furnishings and memorabilia are on display.  Walking back in time will be fun, interesting and educational.

Ben Sutton's Merchandise and Grocery is open on Saturdays, Memorial Day weekend through October from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  It will be open on special holidays during the fall and spring months.

Please call 931-653-4151 for possible changes in the hours of operation.

Maple Grove Campground

Maple Grove Campground is a haven for those who want to "get away" from the noise of the city.  The campground is open all year, accommodates RV's or tents and has full water,  electric and sewer hookups. All sites are shady, and a majority are pull-throughs.  There is a covered pavilion, ideal for picnics, family reunions or other functions.  Restrooms, showers and a Laundromat are also found in the pavilion.  Our large pool opens in May 2005.  Boaters will find launch site very close to the campground.

The Granville Community Club developed and dedicated this community park on May 23, 1998.  It was built to honor over 184 veterans from Granville who have served their country with honor.  The park is located in a beautiful setting on Cordell Hull lake where the original town spring was.  The park contains two picnic shelters, playground, gazebo and restrooms.  It is available for anyone to use and enjoy the beauty of Granville overlooking the Cumberland River.

Granville Old Country Store

The Granville Old Country store ( now called Granville Market) offers fishing bait, gasoline, propane, and full line of groceries.  The store is also known for its good country cooking with special features of fish, ribs and a Sunday Buffet.  While in Granville be sure and visit our store.  We are located on highway 53.  Call 931-653-4069 for more information.
